“These medicines are part of our cultural birthright and I believe we lose more when we step back and chose not to engage.”
— Monica T. Williams, PhD, University of Ottawa’s School of Psychology.
“In many, many ways, all of us are indebted to indigenous peoples and their traditions and their knowledge when we are interested in these medicines.”
— Beatriz Caiuby Labate, PhD, Public Education & Cultural Specialist (MAPS).
Focusing on Closing The Gap
Plant based psychedelics such as Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms), DMT (Ayuhuasca) and Ibogaine (Tabernanthe Iboga shrub) are currently being heavily researched and are likely to all get FDA approval over the coming years to treat various mood disorders and other conditions. (Ketamine is the only current legal “psychedelic” drug used to treat mood disorders). When traditional medicines gain popularity in the modern world, it’s important to show respect and appreciation for the cultures and individuals who have long practiced plant healing before us. This historical context is also what enables a personal relationship and understanding with the sacred plant medicine.
Unfortunately, the prohibition of psychedelics has disproportionately affected the descendants of these cultures, particularly Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. In our sister ketamine clinic, only about 8% of the patients treated in the past 4 years have been people of color. While the issue of discrimination and social equity extends beyond psychedelics, we believe that psychedelics can play a significant role in convergence and reducing the gap of social inequality. Depression and other mood disorders are nondiscriminatory - they don’t care about race, sex, age or financial status. Everyone deserves the opportunity to heal.
